Float, Glide & Go — Maglev Train Kit

Discover the fascinating science behind trains that can float above their tracks with the Maglev Train Kit! This hands-on STEM project introduces students to magnetic levitation (Maglev) and demonstrates how magnetic forces can be used to lift and move a vehicle while dramatically reducing mechanical friction.

By building and experimenting with their own Maglev model, students explore the relationship between magnetism, forces, motion, friction, and transportation engineering while discovering the technology behind some of the world's most advanced high-speed rail systems.

What's in the Kit & How It Works

Maglev—short for Magnetic Levitation—uses magnetic forces to support a vehicle above its guideway rather than relying solely on traditional wheels and rails.

The Maglev Train Kit uses strategically positioned magnets to demonstrate how magnetic attraction and repulsion can create forces that support and guide a model train.

When like magnetic poles face one another, they repel. This repulsive force can oppose the downward pull of gravity and help support the train above the guideway.

With physical contact greatly reduced, the train experiences far less mechanical friction, allowing it to move smoothly along the track.

Students can explore the process from magnetic field → magnetic force → lift/support → reduced contact → reduced friction → smooth motion.

This provides an engaging demonstration of how engineers can use invisible magnetic forces to rethink conventional transportation.

Reimagining Transportation with Magnetism

The Maglev Train Kit transforms the science of magnetism into an exciting hands-on engineering experience. Students don't simply learn that magnets attract and repel—they discover how those same forces can be engineered to support and move a vehicle while minimizing mechanical friction.

By building, testing, and experimenting with their own Maglev system, students gain practical experience with magnetic fields, attraction and repulsion, gravity, friction, forces, motion, and engineering design.

Perfect for STEM classrooms and makerspaces, the Maglev Train Kit connects fundamental physics with the future of transportation, challenging students to explore how magnetic levitation could help create faster, smoother, and more efficient transportation systems.
